About This Service

What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic form of a physical signature, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) in India. It authenticates the identity of the holder digitally and is used to sign electronic documents, forms, and transactions — giving them the same legal validity as a handwritten signature under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

DSC is mandatory for a wide range of government filings including Income Tax returns, MCA company filings, GST registration, tender submissions, customs (ICEGATE), EPFO, and e-procurement portals. It ensures document integrity, non-repudiation, and secure digital transactions.

DSC Token (USB eToken)

A DSC is stored on a USB eToken (crypto token) — a secure hardware device that protects the private key. The eToken is required to sign documents digitally. It must be plugged into your computer when signing. Never share your eToken PIN or physical device with anyone, as it is equivalent to sharing your physical signature.

Certifying Authorities (CAs) in India

Licensed CAs authorized to issue DSC in India include: eMudhra, Sify Technologies, NSDL, CDAC, Capricorn CA, Vsign, and NIC (for government employees). All are regulated by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

Frequently Asked Questions

A DSC is an electronic equivalent of a physical signature, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority. It authenticates the identity of the holder and gives electronic documents the same legal validity as handwritten signatures under the IT Act, 2000.

Class 2 DSC has been discontinued since January 2021. Now only Class 3 DSC is issued, which requires the highest level of identity verification (in-person or video KYC). Class 3 is valid for all government portals.

DSC is mandatory for companies, LLPs, and organizations filing IT returns. Individuals can use Aadhaar OTP or net banking for verification, but DSC is required for 12A, 80G, Form 10A/10AB, and other organizational filings.

A DSC is valid for 1 year or 2 years depending on the option chosen at the time of application. DSC cannot be renewed — a new certificate must be obtained after expiry.

A USB eToken (crypto token) is a secure hardware device that stores the DSC's private key. It must be plugged into your computer to digitally sign documents. It prevents unauthorized use of your digital signature.

Yes, a single Class 3 DSC can be used across all government portals — MCA21, Income Tax e-filing, GST, ICEGATE, EPFO, ESIC, GeM, CPPP, and others — as long as it is registered on those portals.

DSC costs typically range from ₹800 to ₹2,500 depending on the type (individual/organization), validity period (1 or 2 years), and the Certifying Authority. DGFT and Document Signer DSCs may cost more.

A director or authorized signatory can use their personal Class 3 DSC for company MCA filings, provided the DSC is registered against their DIN on the MCA21 portal. A separate Organization DSC may be needed for certain filings.

If the eToken is lost or damaged, you must revoke the existing DSC with the Certifying Authority and apply for a fresh DSC on a new token. Never leave an unreported lost DSC unrevoked as it can be misused.

You can verify DSC validity on the CCA website (cca.gov.in) or on the respective Certifying Authority's portal using the certificate serial number. All major portals also show DSC validity when you attempt to sign.

Yes, DSC is mandatory for all online filings including FCRA registration, 12A/80G Form 10A/10AB, Niti Aayog Darpan registration, and other government portal submissions for NGOs and trusts.

No, DSCs associated with directors or authorized signatories of a dissolved company should be revoked. Personal DSCs of individuals remain valid for their validity period and can be used for personal filings.
